I served this vegan cheese fondue as part of a vegetarian dinner party for me and some girlfriends. It was lighter and healthier than our usual fare, but still very delicious. None of us are committed to vegan or vegetarian diets, but we're more than happy to try new things and we love our veggies!

I used this recipe for "Quick and Dirty 5-Ingredient Vegan Cheeze Sauce" from Oh She Glows for our vegan cheese/cheeze fondue. I really liked it, and the texture was creamy and comforting, similar to melted cheese. If you don't make a lot of vegan food, you might not be totally familiar with some of these ingredients like the almond milk or the nutritional yeast. Everything was very easy to find at my local grocery store, which has a nice organic sections for fancy-pantses like me. Otherwise, you can certainly find what you need online. 

This will serve two people as a meal with an assortment of vegan fondue dippers, and can serve four or more people as part of a larger dinner. I served my vegan cheese fondue with vegan meatballs made with lentils and mushrooms. They were very tasty and reminiscent of falafel, which also would have made a good vegetarian fondue dipper.

Vegan cheese fondue recipe

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup unsweetened, unflavored almond milk
  • 6 tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 1 tablespoon non-dairy buttery spread, such as Earth Balance
  • 1 tbsp all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Directions 

  1. Melt the buttery spread in your pot over low heat.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk the flour and almond milk together until smooth. Stir in the nutritional yeast.
  3. Pour the flour mixture into the pot with the butter and mix well. 
  4. Add the mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to taste. Mix everything well. You may need to add a little more almond milk to achieve the desired consistency. 

Suggested vegan fondue dippers

  • lentil and mushroom vegan meatballs 
  • vegan bread
  • an assortment of cooked vegetables, roasted, steamed, parboiled, or raw

To serve

  1. Pour the fondue into a ceramic fondue pot heated with a tealight. 
  2. Arrange the dippers, such as vegan bread, "meatballs", and cooked vegetables, on plates around the table so that everyone can easily reach them. 
  3. Diners should stab a piece of bread, a meatball, or a vegetable with their fondue fork and dip it into the warm cheese. 
  4. Eat and repeat!
