Ready to raclette? Get a Swissmar raclette grill

Our relationship with our Swissmar Raclette grill is kind of like the relationship between two high school sweethearts who married early, had a couple of nice kids, good jobs, a house in the suburbs, retired at 60 and spent their last two decades gardening and taking seniors-only cruises: It just worked and we never had to look for anything better or different.

I bought our Swissmar raclette because it had good reviews on Amazon, it wasn’t very expensive, and I thought it was cute. I got the marble top because I thought it looked fancier than the cast-iron top. At the time, I didn’t realize that the marble top can double as a hot stone grill, so we can use it to cook a light meal of grilled meat and vegetables without any cheese at all. That’s a nice, healthy version of tabletop cooking!

For me, one of the coolest things about the Swissmar Raclette is that the marble top and the cast-iron are interchangeable. I ended up buying the cast-iron top seperately after a few months when I realized I could use it to cook bacon, crepes, and Japansese pancakes called okonomiyaki.

Of course, we bought this Swissmar 8-person raclette grill to make raclette and we do get a lot of use out of it making raclette dinners. At first, we just made the basic potatoes with melted cheese, and grilled some shrimp, chicken and vegetables on the stone top. With time, we’ve gotten a little more adventurous and turned to raclette recipes online and in books new and old to create more complex dishes. For instance, we’ve made mini raclette pizza flatbreads in the raclette trays and everyone loved them.

The Swissmar KF-77081 8-person Stelvio raclette is very similiar to our Swissmar classic raclette grill in form and function, but the Stelvio has a larger cooking surface. If you’re like us and you use your raclette grill to prepare meals with 2-4 people, the smaller classic grill is certainly a good choice. If you anticipate cooking with 6-8 people, consider splashing out for the bigger grill so everyone can cook at the same time.  

Cleaning a raclette grill

If you have questions about how to clean your raclette grill, I can tell you what I've learned in using ours. First of all, the top is so hot after we're done cooking that I usually just let it sit until the morning. It's gross, but it's just one dish and it cleans right up with some hot water. 

Don't use soap to clean the cast iron top (you shouldn't use soap to clean any cast iron dish). Cast iron cookware develops a patina from the food oils over time, and you don't want to scrub it off with soap. If you do, your food will stick to the surface in a very bad way.

The marble top will get discolored with use, especially if you are cooking anything that has been marinated. However, I scrubbed it with baking soda and it got much cleaner. Some sites caution against using abrasive baking soda to clean marble because it will scratch, but since the grill top is more of a cooking utensil than a decoration, I don't mind.

Overall, we're very happy with our Swissmar raclette and grateful for the opportunity to share that happiness with our guests, preferably over dinner with a bottle of Pinot Grigio.
